A Golfing Article On Course Management For You ...

Course Management – 1

How Far Do You Hit Your Irons?

You will find most good golfers and professionals know how far they hit their iron clubs.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I have played with club golfers and they have turned round to me on the first few holes and asked what club I think they should hit.  How on earth should I know?!  This is really something that every golfer should have an idea about.  Not to know (even roughly) how far you hit each club is really leaving you too much guess work to play good, consistent golf.

It does not take a long time to go on to the range and just find out how far you hit certain irons.  You don’t have to do the full set, maybe only 4, 7, 9 and PW.  That should enable you to work out the ones in-between.  Also, always remember that we all hit the ball different distances, so don’t worry if your 7 iron doesn’t go as far as your partners.

Another problem I see a lot is that golfers tend to think that they can always hit their club to its maximum distance on every shot.  As we all know, that just doesn’t happen.  Try to remember that if you are in-between clubs, you should hit the longer club as it’s not always possible to hit the perfect shot.  Aim to achieve a 90% success and you won’t go too far wrong.

The only exception to the rule about taking the longer club is, of course, if all the trouble on a particular hole is at the back of a small green.
