This is a tip on
using the loft of a golf club at the correct time.
Many golfers, handicap golfers, have a tendency to use the
wrong loft at the wrong time. A lot
of golfers will find, when they have a pitch shot and they get a sand wedge in
their hand, they try and lift the ball in the air.
They are using a club that’s got lots of loft on, 50 degrees of
loft at least, and they’re trying to ‘lift’ the ball up in the air.
If you had a three iron in your hand and you had to pitch
it over the top of a bunker and stop it dead, then the idea would be to try to
lift it high. When you’re using a
lofted club though, just let the loft of the club do the work for you.
Don’t try and lift the ball otherwise what happens is that you end up
either fluffing it in front of you as you catch it behind, or you hit it halfway
up the ball, thinning the ball and flying over the green.
Use the loft of the club, especially when you’re pitching over a
bunker, just let the club do that work.
Likewise, if you’ve got a seven iron in your hand and you try to pitch and roll the ball along the ground to keep it low, don’t flick your wrist and try to lift the ball up in the air because that’s not the idea of the shot. A lot of people do this and find they fluff it behind the ball because they try and lift it. The idea is to keep the ball low and running, so you need to try and keep the club loft doing that work for you. Never lift it up in the air, clubs have loft on them to do the work for you.
