A Golfing Article On Equipment For You ...

Equipment Tip 1

For years now golfers have been told never to blame their clubs, “a workman never blames his tools”, etc, but in the last few years things have changed and now it’s not necessarily the fault of the golfer only.  It is now very important that you get all your golf clubs custom fit to suit your actual swing.

Now, a lot of high handicappers will say they don’t swing the golf club the same way each time.  That’s not a problem, you would use the same lie angle even when you’re hitting a bad shot.  It has to be the correct lie angle, so it’s very important that you get them checked out to make sure that you’re not hitting a golf club that is wrongly fitted to you because then you don’t know if it’s you that’s hit a bad shot or the golf club that’s hit a bad shot.

If you get the golf clubs set up to your loft lie correctly at least then you’ll know for a fact that when you hit a bad shot it was you.  A good way of testing this is to look at your set of irons.  Let’s say your five iron is your favourite iron because you hit it great, but your six iron and your seven iron don’t go anywhere near as good.  They should by rights be better because they’ve got more loft on, but if the lie is wrong then that’s probably the reason why.  If you get them tested, if that is the case you’ll probably find that your five iron has the correct lie for you and your six and seven irons are wrong.  Your favourite club may be the wedge, well that can just be because of the loft but also could be because it’s a perfect lie angle for you, but when you hit the golf ball you’re not putting that different spin on it which is making it go left or making it go right.  If the clubs are digging in on the heel then that means they are too upright which means that basically the club will twist at impact if you hit the ball.  If they’re too flat for you it means the toe of the club is striking the ground before the sole and then that will twist the face of the club open, again this will make the ball spin from left to right or even a slice.

It is very, very important that your wedge is set up correctly.  If you’re hitting a full shot with your wedge and you’re using a proper swing, it’s fine if you can get away with it on the softer turf because the force of the swing and the club head hitting the ground will sometimes make it go through the grass.  But on a short wedge pitch shot of about 40 yards you’re not using the same force and the ground will grab the sole of your wedge very, very easily.

As far as the custom fitting of your irons is concerned, just bear this in mind, if your irons are 1 degree, just 1 degree out as far as being too upright or too flat, that can make the golf ball go between three and five yards offline, depending on the length of the shot.  So, on average a five iron hit with a 1 degree upright lie will go up to five yards left of the target with a normal swing.  Now the problem with that is if you’re using clubs that you have been using for quite a few years now that are wrongly fitted to you.  You’ll then try and compensate because you think your golf swing is going wrong so you’ll aim offline and you’ll compensate by then making the ball go back onto line.  So basically you’re putting the faults into your golf swing or into your golf game to compensate for a badly fitted golf club.
