Long Irons
A lot of high handicap golfers have trouble using longer irons. A big problem for them is that they get a three iron in their hand and they have seen Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, etc on TV hitting high towering long iron shots. They can’t do that, they can’t create the power and they can’t create the spin to get the ball up in the air. So don’t try and hit it high! If you’ve got a three or four iron in your hand which you’re using off the tee or off the fairway, expect the thing to go low and run. Don’t think you can hit a high-flying three iron that’s going to drop like a butterfly onto the green. I would also say that most golfers over a mid-teen handicap probably shouldn’t have a three and four iron in their bag. I would advise them to get little rescue clubs and little fairway woods, throw the three and four irons out of the bag and put them in. Those are much easier clubs to hit, with a lower centre of gravity and no high handicap golfer should really be using long irons.
