How many times have you seen golfers when they’re
standing on the tee or on the fairway, having a practice swing, and everything
looks really good. You stand there
watching them swing, they do the right movements, etc because they’ve got the
right thoughts in their head. As you
stand there you think “not bad, he knows what he’s doing, he can see the
movement that he should be doing there”. Then
he gets over the ball and is a completely different animal, has a quick thrash
at it, loses balance, loses all technique and the ball shoots off at a different
angle, nothing like the practice swing! If
you’re going to have a practice swing at least try and repeat that swing on
the actual shot. If you’re not
going to repeat it when you’re hitting the ball, don’t waste your time and
energy by having a practice swing, if you’re not going to do anything like it
anyway when you hit the golf ball.
When you’re taking a practice swing, remember you’ve
got the thoughts in your head of what you want to do and how you want to do it.
So you must have the knowledge, or you must have the feel, in your own
mind. What you’re trying to do is
repeat that, remember that’s a correct movement, don’t try and do something
different. Remember, if you can
repeat your practice swing, and you do have the knowledge in your head of what
you’re supposed to be doing, then this shot will take care of itself.
Too many golfers stand there, try to do something completely different
and hit the ball. When you do it
right on your practice swing it’s because there’s no ball there so you
haven’t got that in your mind. Your
body freely just makes a golf swing which is correct.
When you’re over the ball your thought goes straight to the ball
itself. Remember, the ball’s not
going to move until you hit it so you may as well do a correct movement and make
sure the ball is hit correctly. Too
many people are trying to get the thing over and done with as quickly as
possible and don’t think about how their leg movements were, their feet ,
their hips, their shoulders, their turn, their balance, etc.
