Downswing
This time I’d like to deal with
the downswing. Remember that with
many hookers of the ball, the club was in a closed position, with our left wrist
bowed and left elbow bent.
From this position, the main fault
many golfers encounter is that the club will come down on a very steep angle,
while there’s also no width in the backswing because of the bent left elbow.
This position also means that the
wrists cannot be rotated and released down and through on impact to create the
correct draw spin because they rotate the club far too much, creating a duck
hook.
The normal downswing motion that
would create the slice from such a closed position is when the golfer pulls down
the club with the hands, reversing the wrist position, so that the hands stay in
front of the club. This opens the
face and creates a left to right slice spin.
It’s impossible to create draw from this position.
Instead, the best position is that
from the top of the backswing we should be able to rotate and release our hands
with the club as we move into the downswing.
With a correct grip and a more
neutral movement on the backswing when we make our downswing and rotate the
club, we should find the club is in a more square position at impact – and not
in the more closed position it would be if we released the club from the closed
top position.
Try and make these improvements to your swing, and you might just find that elusive draw isn’t quite as elusive any more!
